Aleatha Romig Day! Giveaways, Reviews, and More!

**GIVEAWAY at bottom of post**

We have declared today, Aleatha Romig Day on Books Vs Boys Blog. Aleatha Romig has given a whole new meaning to the phase “all actions will have consequences” and who has all but invented the term MIND FUCK.

Aleatha Romig’s Consequences series will contain 3 books:

Consequences

Purchase --> Kindle I Paperback

Truth

Purchase --> Kindle I Paperback

Convicted – Expected release date late 2013 or early 2014

You can see Debbie’s exciting and emotional review of Consequences HERE

Now for our Never Before Seen Review of Truth:

My Rating: RAPE ME NOW!! (5++ Stars)

Steam Level: HOT

After the jaw-dropping, wall punching ending of Consequences I had absolutely no idea what to expect going into Truth. Any premonitions or ideas I had hiding in the back of my head were pretty much tossed out the window and grinded into the pavement by Tony’s foot within the first few chapters.

This review is definitely going to be more about feelings and emotions than plot because I don’t want to give anything away to anyone who hasn’t read either Consequences or Truth. And there is SOO much to potentially spoil. So with that said, If you haven’t read Book 1 – Consequences (what the hell are you waiting for?) I would recommend not reading any further in this review (just skip down to the fun stuff), you have been warned!

Truth contains even more backstory about Tony and his father and I loved it. It lets us delve even deeper into Tony’s mind and what make him tick, what has made him who he is. And pay close attention because there are actually clues that foreshadow some of the HUGE revelations that come later on. And I mean HUGE jaw-dropping, wall punching revelations and events just like what we saw with the ending in Consequences.

I HATED Tony after Consequences, like hated in that I thought he deserved to rot in a jail cell for the rest of his life and never see the light of day again, and if rats slowly gnawed away at him until he bled out or died from a disease, well that would be okay..… But then I read Truth. In Truth we see a Claire that is able to stand up for herself (to an extent). In Truth we see a Tony that has had growth, a Tony that is willing to bend (even if it’s just a tiny bit), we see a Tony that actually has a heart (although it is yet to be seen how whole his heart actually is). My emotions concerning Tony we toyed with, my world was flipped upside down, then righted only to be flipped upside down again. My feelings for Tony by the end of Truth are best summed up in these two lines form the book:

“Love and hate are very close emotions. Both intense and consuming.”

“Could it be possible to hate and love someone too?”

As I mentioned earlier, Claire does develop a smidge of a backbone, but as with everything else that involves Anthony Rawlings it has it limits. I like Claire but I will never truly understand her thoughts or actions and that’s probably because I‘ve never been anywhere close to the situation that she has endured. My feelings for her actions occasionally resembled the same ones I have for Tony: Love Vs Hate. Especially where Harry was concerned, did I want it to happen? Do I like Harry? Is he a better choice? Ah! Even after knowing how all of Truth plays out I still don’t know the answers to those questions.

And yes, we are left with questions at the end, but we also receive a lot of answers. Occasionally those answers just lead to more questions, but that is what I love most about this series. It’s completely off the grid of predictability, it’s plot is an earthquake of actions and consequences, it is layer upon layer upon layer of pure genius.

The ending of Truth! Ah! It is JUST as shocking as the ending of Truth, but I wouldn’t call it a cliffhanger. It leaves all of the characters in a place that I can live with until the final installment of this trilogy, Convicted, is released.

If I had to describe Truth in 3 words they would be: Brilliant, Evocative, and of course Mind-Fuck

Now go pick up this book! My review does not do this series justice, It is a ride and journey that can only be discovered by reading it for yourself.

Review: If I Were You by Lisa Renee Jones

My Rating: Rape! (5 stars)

Genre: New Adult Romantic Suspense/Erotica

Steam Level: Boiling point!

If I were you I would head over and grab a copy of this book right now! It is exquisitely written. It is highly erotic. It is eerily intriguing. It is a MUST READ, a phenomenal beginning to what is sure to be an epic trilogy!

This book has been compared to 50 shades and crossfire and I just want to share my thoughts on that. While If I Were You gives off the same emotional intensity and eroticism that those two series do, it is its OWN story. It has a well done and solid plot that is completely original and will suck you in from page 1. The mystery factor to the story had my heart thumping throughout almost the entire book, it gives off that feeling that not everything is as it seems. I did not eat or sleep while I was reading this and my poor kids were ignored, it is that good! So consider yourself warned, THIS BOOK IS ADDICTIVE.

Through a turn of events Sara ends up the owner of an abandoned storage unit and upon further investigation she discovers that the locker belongs to a girl named Rebecca. After reading Rebecca’s highly evocative journals Sara becomes worried for the girl’s safety and begins a quest to find out what really happened to her. Sara’s quest leads her to Allure, a prestigious art gallery, that contains her dream job and just maybe her dream man as well….

I really liked Sara; she is sweet, but independent with an inner wildcat to her. She has a complicated past that is slowly revealed, though there is still much more of her story to learn. She is constantly struggling with her fear for Rebecca’s whereabouts and her own wants, needs, and desires.

“ I feel like I’m swimming between two shorelines—one the bland simple life, the other dark and erotic—and I can’t quite reach either.” ~Sara

“I follow his lead, searching beyond the glass to the activity on the street, thinking about how black and white I’ve let life become when I want to live in color.” ~Sara

Chris is so freaking hot. Easy going and sweet, Controlling and passionate, and confident in his own bad ass skin. He uses control to put a barrier between himself and Sara. It was captivating to watch Sara try to chip away at his wall, sometimes she succeed but most of the time causes Chris to do his best to reinforce it. It is obvious that Chris wants Sara in every way, but he is constantly warning her away. He has his own complex past and secrets and while the big reveal at the end is jaw-dropping, it was also a little predictable. BUT I have a feeling that there are many more layers of Chris to uncover as this series progresses and I can’t wait to discover every hard inch of him ;)

“Be warned, Sara. I’m no saint. If I take you upstairs, I’m going to strip you naked and fuck you the way I’ve wanted ot since the moment we first met.” ~Chris

“Do you know what happens when you push a dragon? They burn you alive, baby. You’re playing with fire.” ~Chris

There are some extremely intriguing secondary characters as well. Mainly Sara’s new boss, Mark Compton; he is sexy and alluring and there are a few times I was wondering if more of a love triangle will begin to develop. There is also the matter of Rebecca’s journals and who her ‘mysterious’ love might be. A few suspects are presented, including Mark, and I can't wait to read more of Rebecca's story in the relating novellas.

Yes, there are a lot of questions left at the end of this book and holy crap that cliffhanger ending! It’s one of those that you love to hate! This is the first full length book of a trilogy as well as a slew of novellas (you can find the reading order below). It does an impeccable job of developing characters and relationships, setting up an intriguing plot, and leaves you holding your breath for more. My feelings when finishing this book are reprsented in the photo below: Hot, Needy, and felling like I'm not seeing the whole picture.

*Breaking News* The Inside Out Trilogy has been optioned by Starz Network for a TV series. I have NO doubt that this will be a hit as it contains all the elements of a blockbuster: Mystery, Intrigue, Suspense, Love Triangles, Money, Power, Eroticism, Danger, and Domination.

Review: A Bad Boy is Good to Find by Jennifer Lewis

My Rating: Kiss

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Steam Level: warm – hot

The beginning of this book is definitely intriguing and grabs your attention, but at the same time leaves you feeling a little distanced from the characters. I won’t go into detail with the plot, there is a lot of back story and twists and turns. But think the movie Sweet Home Alabama meets a reality TV show with some mystery and intrigue thrown in.

I couldn’t stand the heroine, Lizzie. She is treated horribly in the beginning of the book, but by the ending she has dished out 10 times what she received. She is shallow, shellfish, and overall high maintenance. By the ending she does redeem herself some, but in my eyes it wasn’t nearly enough to make up for what she put Conroy through.

“Damn, being a bitch is exhausting. If I lighten up a little, don’t take it personally.” – Lizzie

While I liked Conroy, the hero, I was a little disappointed. Being what the title is, I was ready for a tattooed, motorcycle ridin’ bad boy with a dirty mouth. But that is not Conroy…at all. He is more of a country boy that is genuinely nice, clean cut, and respects Lizzie way more than she deserves. That’s not to say that I didn’t like him or that he wasn’t hot in his own way, I just went into the book expecting something entirely different. Conroy has secrets, lots of them, his past is something he left behind with no intention to ever revisit again, at least until he meets Lizzie…

“I’m not capable of love. Maybe I was once, but that part of me is dead. I’m not really capable of anything other than survival” ~Conroy

Despite the intriguing and unique plot parts of the story were a little slow. There is a lot of conversation that distracts a bit from the flow. The same conversation between Lizzie and Conroy seems to be had over and over again, and a couple of times I had to stop myself from skimming whole paragraphs (something I HATE to do).

With all that being said, this is still a good book and a decent read. I appreciate that the author stepped outside the box and tried something a little different. I just felt it could have been a little better. There was too much going on to see the characters fully develop and I never really felt the chemistry between them.

An ARC was received from the publisher for an honest review.

Review: Walking Disaster by Jamie McGuire

My Rating: Date Me Now! (4.5 stars)

Genre: New Adult Romance

Steam Level: Hot

First off, I did not re-read Beautiful Disaster before reading Walking Disaster. Personally I feel like I was able to enjoy Walking Disaster much more that way, otherwise a lot of the book would have seemed fairly repetitive. It’s been over a year since I read BD, so while I still remember the basic plot and characters, parts of Walking Disaster felt like reading a new story as I remembered specific scenes, sub plots, or conversations that I had forgotten about. My advice would be that you DEFINITLEY need to have read BD in order to enjoy WD, but I would not recommend re-reading it beforehand.

Now on to Travis. Travis, Travis, Travis. Oh how I want to kiss, lick, and slap every inch of his face at the same time.  He is a raging ball of emotions and every emotion that he experiences is oversized from anger to lust to love. In some instances his feelings had me swooning and lusting over him, but when his raging dragon showed his head I wanted to take a hesitant step back. I forgot how short his temper was and how volatile he could be. We see even more of that side of his personality in WD because there are scenes where he is on the verge of going off, but manages to hold it in so Abby never knows about it. Yes his temper scared me a couple of times, BUT his wrath was almost always in response to his intense uncontrollable love for Abby (even when he didn’t know he was in love with her yet). Anger and fighting is what Travis has grown up knowing and is one of the few ways he knows how to express his feelings and let off steam. By the end of WD (especially in the epilogue) we finally see a Travis that has matured and learned to get his emotions under to control to an extent, but Travis is always going to be Travis. Would we want him any other way?

The relationship between Abby and Travis is all-consuming, dysfunctional, and addictive. There is so much passion between them that they can’t think straight without each other. We see this even more in WD. There is sooo much angst in this book and I was NOT able to set it down. My heart broke for Travis over and over again. Even though I knew their HEA was coming at the end, it was almost worse knowing everything they had to go through before they got it.

“Maybe it was just me. Maybe it was just me and her. Maybe together we were this volatile entity that would either implode or meld together. Either way, it seemed the moment I met her, my life had been tured upside down. And I didn’t want it any other way.” ~Travis

The epilogue was surprising and sweet and helps to set up the books Jamie plans to write about Travis’s brothers.  But besides the Epilogue, there weren’t really any heart-stopping ‘moments’ that I hadn’t already seen in BD. Not that I didn’t LOVE re-reading some of my favorite scenes EVER written, but just be forewarned that WD is a companion novel and the re-telling of BD in every sense of the word. It is a beautiful and tormenting story, but it the same story we all know and love.

“Even though we’d put each other through hell, we’d found heaven. Maybe that was more than a couple of sinner deserved, but I wasn’t going to complain.” ~Travis

To those of you who are hesitant to read Walking Disaster because you don't want a repeat of the same book, I understand your fear and there is some repetition in this book, but if you loved Beautiufl Disaster you will love Walking Disaster. My heart raced and broke just as strongly in WD as it did in BD, despite knowing what would happen. If you haven't read either of these books yet, what are you waiting for???

GIVEAWAY and Review: Rules of Entanglement by Gina L Maxwell

**GIVEAWAY at bottom of post***

My Rating: Date Me Now! (4.5 stars)

Genre: Contemporary Romance

 Steam Level: Super Hot!

Combine a Hawaii resort setting, tequila body shots, and one controlling MMA Fighter and you have one sexy read! This books opens up a like a great romantic comedy. When Vanessa’s best friend and Jackson’s sister comes down with and awful stomach virus and can’t make it to Hawaii the week before her wedding to plan it, Jackson and Vanessa are forced to pretend to be the engaged couple in order to appease a wedding planner who ‘refuses’ to work with anyone but the actual bride and groom. This leaves the two in a hilarious and awkward predicament.

I love that Vanessa wasn’t a quite push-over. She was sarcastic and outgoing and didn’t let anyone intimidate her. She had an extremely rough childhood and harbors some gut-wrenching secrets, but she doesn’t let it show and has tried her best to put her past behind her and move forward. She does this by creating a set of rules to live by to protect herself and her heart. And then she meets Jackson…who threatens to break every single rule she has…

Jackson is an incredibly hot mix of contradictions: domineering and easy going, sweet and controlling, Fighter and Surfer. Need I say more????

How I saw Jackson and Vanessa:

The chemistry between the two is full blast from the beginning, but I love the slow change in their feelings from dislike to lust to respect to eventually love throughout the story. The sarcastic banter between them had me cracking up multiple times. And boy can Gina Maxwell write a sex scene! WOW! I love stories that contain humor, hot sex, and a strong plot and this book delivered on all three.

There were a few parts that were a little slow; the book covers only one week in time so you get a lot of details. That being said some of the details were delicious! The story does have one of my pet peeves: Lack of communication or the withholding of information is one of the main causes of drama between the hero and heroine. However, I will say that it didn’t bother me nearly as much as usual and the author handled it well.

Favorite Quote: “She’d played a game with a dragon and ended up pinned beneath his massive body as he prepared to breathe fire.”

Overall a fun, hot, quick read that I highly recommend! This was my first book by Gina Maxwell and it definitely won’t be my last!

Review: Grave Bound by T.R. Graves

My Rating: Kiss

Genre: New Adult Romance/Thriller

Steam Level: Warm – Hot

Grave Bound is very hard book for me to rate/review. My feelings ranged from 1 star – 5 stars at different times throughout this story and I finally ended up somewhere in the middle. It is very slow paced, especially in the beginning. When I picked up this book I was looking for something different and unique and it certainly delivered in that aspect. Its premise is something that hasn’t been done before. Emily lives in a patriarchal commune that is ruled by her father. She has never known a life outside of the commune, but when a day of hooky turns into a chance meeting with two outsiders Emily’s life as she knows it begins to unravel and feelings she never thought possible begin to blossom.

The Commune or The Community as they call it grabbed my attention from the beginning, however I felt like there were a lot questions left unanswered. Some of the situations and lifestyles were a bit unbelievable and it was never exactly explained what the community was or why it was formed. And when some of the community secrets were revealed in the end I was left a little…underwhelmed? After all the buildup  I was expecting something a little more, but there is a second book coming out so maybe more information will be revealed at that time.

Emily was a very interesting heroine. While I loved Emily’s personality, I didn’t really understand how she turned out to be so outgoing, strong willed, and a little spit fire with the circumstances of her upbringing. Her dialogue also bothered me, it felt very redneck and uneducated (and that’s saying a lot coming from me who was raised in Alabama) and it was also inconsistent. She spoke with this very country accent but it didn’t transfer over to her thoughts or inner monologues. She was prone to overreacting and had NO patience.

Levi was definitely a swoon-worthy alpha male, almost too perfect! I’m not usually a fan on insta-love and this book was no different. The connection between Levi and Emliy came on too sudden and too perfectly for me to feel the chemistry between them, at least at first. But by the end I had warmed up to the connection between them, however they had only known each other all of about 2 or 3 weeks.

My favorite part of this book? The ending! The pace and writing really picked up in the last third or so of this story as the plot started to come together. And the last chapter or so? Holy crap, I never saw that ending coming! Obviously I can’t say more than that because I don’t want to spoil anything, but I will say it was heart-stopping, gut-wrenching, and will leave you hanging! But don’t worry, the second book Under-Ground will be released sometime the summer.

This book is full of friction, sexual tension, and danger. If you’re looking for a unique and jaw dropping premise that has a little romance mixed in then you should add this on to you TBR.

GIVEAWAY and Mini Review: Seduction and Snacks by Tara Sivec

Giveaway at bottom of post!

Seduction and Snacks Mini Review:

My Rating: Rape!

Genre: New Adult Contemporary Romance/Humor (18++)

Steam Level: Hot – Super Hot!

This book is freaking hilarious and I LOVED it. It’s very different than most reads and I will warn you that the humor can be dirty and a little obscene at times, but that’s one of the things I loved most. Tara Sevic will take you places you never even thought about going!

Case in point: "Give me a cat over a kid any day. You can open up a bag of Meow Mix, plop it down on the floor next to a bucket of water, go on vacation for a week, and come home to an animal teats so busy licking it's own ass that it has no idea you were even gone. You can't do that with a kid. Well, I guess you could, but I'm sure it's frowned upon in most circles. And if my kid could lick his own ass, I'd have saved a shit load of money on diapers, I can tell you that."

You HAVE to read this book, especially if you've had kids. I literally had to leave my bedroom because I was keeping my husband up laughing. If I EVER think about having more kids, please someone make me go re-read the first couple chapters of this book! Even the chapter titles are funny!

There is a plot to this story, although it is very simplistic and cute. The humor is beyond anything I have ever read and there are some pretty H.O.T bedroom scenes. It was just what I needed after a string of darker, deeper reads. Be warned however, it can be a bit vulgar and you might pee in your pants.

"All the baby books written by women who had the most perfect birth experience in the world said you should talk to your child in the womb. That was about the only piece of advice I took from those things. Every day I told him if he ruined my vagina I would video tape his birth and show all his future girlfriends what happened to your who-ha when you had sex, ensuring that he will never ever, get laid."

I HIGHLY recommend you give this one a try if you haven’t already!!!

REVIEW: On an Edge of Glass by Autumn Doughton

My Rating: Kiss Me Now! (3.5 stars)

Genre: New Adult Romance

Steam Level: mild-warm

“I am on an edge of glass. And it’s breaking.”

Ellie has a perfect plan. Get into Columbia law school and follow in her parent’s footsteps and join their law firm. Then she meets Ben…

“But, here’s a sad fact: perfect isn’t mean to be. When you aim for perfect, you just wind up ruined.”

On an Edge of Glass is beautifully written with a very simplistic plot. A coming of age romance novel at its very basic, girl meets boy and they fall in love after a few bumps in the road. BUT it is done well…yes it’s a bit slow in places and predictable; however I wanted to highlight half the book. Perfect when you are looking for a sweet and mild read to slow down with for a bit.

The writing is what drew me into to this story. It is eloquent and moving. Her descriptions were so beautifully written that I had to catch my breath a couple times. The author really has a way with words and it was what kept me reading through some of the slow parts.

A lot of this book was really good, but there were some things I disliked:

~ This book contains a lot of drinking/partying and sexual tension. That is NOT a bad thing, AT ALL…but when two main characters first attraction is purely sexually and the tension between the two could be cut with a knife I really want that ‘relief’ when they finally have sex. I didn’t really get that here because the sex was barely even glossed over and left me wanting. (And this is just how I felt, so you might not have the same opinion as little ol’ me, lol)

~ A lot more telling than showing. I got a bit tired of Ellie’s inner monologue.

~It contains one of my pet peeves: Lack of communication and misunderstanding are the root of the issues between Ellie and Ben for the most part. I hate it when all the drama could have been cleared up with one conversation.

This book is real and normal. It has its fair share of drama but nothing that is life or death. I liked both Ben and Ellie but I never really felt a connection with them. The supporting cast of characters were a lot of fun and I hope the author will write stories for them as well.

This was an okay read for me, but I would highly recommend it if you’re looking for something sweet and a bit slow paced with realistic characters and situations.

Here are a few of my favorite quotes. I had a hard time deciding which ones to post, lol, the quotes and writing style in general were my favorite parts of this book. The author just has a way with words:

“The trees are the way tress have always been, Elizabeth. What’s different is the way that you’re looking at them.”

“He is the musician and I am the instrument. I glide beneath him, barely breathing, barely thinking.”

“Happiness isn’t something that you can plan for. It comes knocking unexpectedly, just like opportunity. And it’s up to you to answer the door and invite it inside.”

GIVEAWAY and review of After Math by Denise Grover Swank

Giveaway at bottom of post!!

My Rating: Kiss Me Now (3.5 stars)

Genre: New Adult Romance

Steam Level: warm

The title and cover of After Math had me immediately intrigued. It starts off really strong and I couldn’t put it down. I kept reading and reading and waiting for something to happen or for a big reveal to come, but nothing BIG really happened. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed it and a lot of secrets are revealed throughout the story about both Tucker and Scarlett, but maybe it was the title that had me thinking there would be something a little more…shocking?? It was still a captivating read that I enjoyed, especially the last third or so.

There are parts that are a little slow, but the author did a good job of giving the whole story an eerily sad feeling and I mean that in a good way. The story is told in first person through Scarlett who is one of the unhappiest characters I have ever read about. She is depressing, obsessively shy, and cries at the drop of a hat. Granted she has had an extremely tough run in life and has anxiety issues, but her constant wallowing got a little old after a while. However, as I said that depressing, hopeless feeling that Scarlett has really comes through in the story, even if you don’t end up liking her you can certainly understand why she feels the way she does.

“I shut myself off from everyone and everything to survive. I’m hidden somewhere deep inside and sometimes I wonder if I’ll stay buried forever. If I’ll ever find my way out.” ~ Scarlett

Now for Tucker. I loved Tucker, even his bi-polar personality. He is a cocky soccer star/ notorious playboy at the university they attend, but when you dig a little deeper you realize it’s all a façade. He is just as lonely and miserable as Scarlett but deals with it in a completely different way. I loved that he really took time to understand Scarlett when no one else before has. He has a long list of secrets that will slowly be revealed throughout the book. With Scarlett he feels like he is ‘safe’ and can finally be his true self with someone. They share a common bond over loneliness and together they find common ground that allows them to learn how to love unhindered and accept love in return.

“I don’t want to leave you. Once I walk out that door, the real world takes over.” ~ Tucker

Meet Tucker and Scarlett (These picture were taken from the authors page):

I was so glad there was no insta-love between these two, it was both heartwarming and heart breaking to watch the relationship between them blossom from dislike/misunderstanding to something much more. They both struggle with what a meaningful relationship will mean to them and both of them try to shield their heart from potential hurt. Neither of them has had an easy life and when they finally find something real and worth fighting for, they're both afraid it's too good too be true.

There is a beautiful HEA complete with an epilogue, but I did feel it was just a bit rushed. After all the heartache they had gone through I could have used a little more happy!

If you’re a lover of New Adult books, I have no doubt you will enjoy this read!

Favorite Quote:

“It’s as though a veil has been thrown over my heart, and no one has ever been able to tear it down. Until this boy. This unattainable, untouchable, unreliable boy.” ~Scarlett
