Review: The First Last Kiss by Ali Harris

My Rating: Date Me Now! (4.5 stars)

Genre: Contemporary Romance/ Chick-Lit

Steam Level: Warm

I can’t even…I don’t know…my heart is in a million pieces right now scattered across my floor and even when I manage to pick up all the pieces,  I don’t think I’ll ever be able to put them back the way they were before. But I will pick them back up because if nothing else this book has shown me that it IS possible to put your heart back together after it has been shattered.

The First Last Kiss is the story of Molly Carter and Ryan Cooper, it is told through flashbacks of kisses in a unique and original way. It is exquisitely written in a sorrowful but quirky style that sucked in my heart and wouldn't let go until I had read the final line. It begins with a thirty three year old Molly packing up her things and preparing to move out of her house, with every picture she sees or memento she touches a memory flashes through her.

“How many kisses do we waste, brush away, throw away, and then when they are no longer there, how many times do we wish that we could relive them all a hundredfold?”

Molly is a remarkable and thoroughly developed character; layer upon layer is pulled off of her as you delve deeper into this book. She is unsure but confident, timid but controlling, she knows exactly how she wants her life to play out…or does she? I hated her at times and I loved her at times, she drew strong emotions from me. But for me, that’s what this book was about: Emotions. Whether they were love, hate, jealousy, blissful happiness, or tormenting sadness, your heart will be taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride through all of these and then some.

Ryan is so sweet and emotional, so full of life and energy. His happiness and vitality is addicting and you can’t help but to be drawn to him. Don’t get me wrong, he does have a handful of flaws but they only make him more genuine and lovable.

I will say that is a very long book with lots of details and I’ll warn you ahead of time to pay careful attention to the dates. It’s important to remember what happens when so you don’t get confused when the storyline jumps forward or backward in time.

This is a romance, a coming of age, a story of life and all of the happiness and sadness that real life unfairly contains. It is a story that will make me look at life differently, will make me kiss my loved ones more often, and will forever be in my heart. I can honestly say that it drew emotions from me that most books cannot even scratch the surface of.

I want to recommend this book to all of you but I’m torn because I feel bad subjecting you to the torment of emotions I have been through over the past few days…

“Do me a favour will you? Break a rule today, go crazy, live in the moment. Open your heart. Now open it a little more. Love big, love even bigger. Don’t be afraid to stand up, to shout it out, to be heard. Say I LOVE YOU.”

I’m off to go grab a bottle of wine and a huge towel to soak up the sobbing mess of tears I am after finishing this story….

  1. Amazing review - I am a glutton for punishment so I think I will submit to the torment and add this one to my TBR.

    1. If you like torment then this is perfect for you, I pretty much sobbed through the last 30% and I don't cry easily. It is both beautiful and heartbreaking. It took a little time for me to get into but once I did I couldn't put it down!
